More than 100 gravestones in Richmond Cemetery were overturned over the weekend, said Mike Rice, director of grounds for the cemetery.
The stones date from as recently as the fall of 2009 to the 1800s, Rice said. The vandalism was discovered Saturday morning, he said.
Rice gathered names from the stones on Monday in the hope of contacting descendants that might be in the area. He couldn't give an estimate of the damage, and said many of the older stones now broken into pieces are irreplaceable.
The vandalism has been reported to Richmond police.
