A Florida man who led police on a high-speed chase on Interstate 75 and then shot himself died Sunday night.
Allen Mitchell, 62, of Palm Harbor, Fla., died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Mitchell was driving on I-75 in Fayette County about 7:30 a.m. Saturday when Kentucky State Police tried to make a traffic stop. Trooper Ronald Turley said Mitchell refused to stop his pickup and sped off northbound.
Two cruisers pursued Mitchell in a chase that reached 95 mph. Mitchell eventually stopped on the shoulder of the road in Scott County. As officers approached the truck, Turley said, Mitchell shot himself while inside his vehicle. He then attempted to drive off, striking a police cruiser and crossing three lanes of traffic before crashing into a concrete median.
