Federal charge added in helicopter laser light case

A Cynthiana man accused of shining a laser light into the cockpit of an airborne Lexington police helicopter is still facing a charge in U.S. District Court.

Two counts of felony wanton endangerment were dropped against Jonathan Tyrone Maybrier in Fayette Circuit Court Monday. However, according to federal court records, Maybrier was indicted in U.S. District Court on one count of interfering with an aircraft on June 17.

According to police records, Sgt. Patrick Murray and Officer Dennis Smith said someone in a car aimed the laser pointing device into the cabin of Air One while it was flying near Richmond and New Circle roads.

According to the federal indictment, Maybrier "discharged a laser into the cockpit of a Lexington Police Department helicopter in flight, temporarily blinding the pilot."

A future court date for Maybrier had not been set Wednesday.
