Woman is shot in Winchester; boyfriend is charged

A Winchester man was charged with shooting his girlfriend while she was trying to leave a home in Winchester on Wednesday morning, police said.

Jimmy Scaggs Jr., 22, is is accused of shooting Kimberly Owens, 19, in the right side of her torso, Winchester Police Capt. James Hall said.

Owens was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting happened at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on Oliver Street, near downtown Hall said.

Owens told police that Scaggs had threatened her with a gun, and that she was shot in the side as she turned to leave. Scaggs told police that the gun accidentally fired.

Scaggs is charged with first-degree assault and four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment. He was charged with wanton endangerment because four juveniles were at the home.

Scaggs was taken to the Clark County jail.
