Standoff in Richmond ends; man charged with attempted murder

A Richmond man is accused of shooting at an officer during a nearly 21/2-hour standoff, Richmond police said.

The standoff ended peacefully. Chris Harris, 21, is charged with attempted murder, police said.

About 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers were sent to the 100 block of Lowell Avenue to investigate a reported fight.

Police said Harris struck his grandfather in the head with a soda can during an argument. The grandfather left the house and called police.

Two officers knocked on the door of the house and saw Harris through a window as he approached the front door. The officers saw a handgun in his hand and started to retreat. Harris fired through a front window at one officer, police said. The officer was not struck.

The second officer shot once, but the shot didn't strike Harris.

Police secured a perimeter and called for an emergency response unit. A negotiator called Harris and persuaded him to surrender shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday. After a search of the home, police found a handgun and three long guns. The names of the officers were not released Thursday.

Harris was being held Thursday at the Madison County jail.
