Richmond man charged in July robbery

A Richmond man was charged Thursday for his alleged role in a robbery last month at an apartment complex in Richmond.

Franklin Murphy Jr., 25, was charged with four counts of first-degree robbery, one count of first-degree burglary and three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, police said. The charges stem from a July 15 robbery at an apartment in the 400 block of Turpin Drive.

The apartment's residents told police they heard a knock at the door, and when they answered, two men — one armed with a sawed-off shotgun, the other with a wooden club — rushed inside. One resident was struck in the head with either the gun or the club.

The two men, who wore masks, ordered all seven occupants of the apartment into the living room and demanded money. The robbers took three cell phones, two packs of cigarettes and $80 in cash.

An investigation led police to Murphy, who was found Thursday at a local motel. Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock said they police are searching for the other man.
