Man sentenced on gun charge in ex-football player's shooting

A Lexington man involved in the fatal shooting of a former standout Henry Clay High School football player was sentenced Friday on a charge of being a felon in possession of a gun.

Deondrae Darnel Fishback was sentenced to four years in prison, but Judge James Ishmael suspended the sentence and gave Fishback five years' probation.

Fishback was arrested Sept. 29, 2009 after police responded to a call about someone trying to break into a home at 623 Georgetown Street. Officers found Jermaine "Hungry" Birch, 22, with multiple gunshot wounds, according to police and coroner reports.

Birch, who graduated from Henry Clay in 2006, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators that Fishback fired the weapon in self-defense. Fishback was never charged in Birch's death.
