Paris father charged with hitting referee at son's game

The father of a Paris Middle School student was charged with assault after he allegedly hit a referee at his son's football game Thursday night, Paris police said.

Samuel Vasquez, 35, of Paris was charged with assault of a sports official, a misdemeanor, Paris police Lt. Jeff Lizer said. The referee was not badly injured and did not have to be hospitalized, Lizer said.

The alleged assault happened about 9:30 p.m., after the game, but it stemmed from a pile-up during the game. Vasquez apparently did not like how the referee handled his son, Lizer said.

Vasquez smacked the referee across the face during a confrontation on the field after the game, Lizer said. Vasquez was being held at the Bourbon County jail.
