Berea couple indicted in child-abuse case

A Berea couple has been indicted on charged of first-degree criminal abuse of a 2-year-old child.

As of Wednesday afternoon, John Franklin Breedlove, 27, and Samantha Christine Boyd, 24, had not been arrested or lodged in the Madison County jail.

The indictment says the two intentionally subjected the child to torture or cruel punishment. Breedlove was also charged with being a persistent felony offender, which would enhance the criminal abuse charge against him to a Class B felony.

Criminal abuse is a Class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in prison; a Class B felony is punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison.

Boyd was a pretrial officer in Fayette County before she verbally resigned that position on Dec. 18, according to a spokeswoman for the state Administrative Office of the Courts. The AOC received a formal letter of resignation Jan. 3.

Breedlove pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal abuse in 2003, according to Madison County court records. At that time, a judge ordered him to complete a 12-month in-patient treatment by Feb. 12, 2004, and he was also ordered not to be alone with children under the age of 14.
