Grand jury to decide whether to indict Laurel shooter

Investigators will let a grand jury decide whether to charge a Laurel County man who shot and killed another man earlier this week, according to a news release from Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Police said Emory Hibbitts, 59, shot Ernie McKnight, 54, once in the chest with a pistol.

The shooting happened after McKnight drove to Hibbitts' home east of London and the two argued Monday evening, police said. The men reportedly were arguing over a woman, said Deputy Gilbert Acciardo, a spokesman with the sheriff's office.

Hibbitts has told police he feared for his life, Acciardo said.

Police will present evidence to the grand jury in February.
