Lexington man faces a reduced charge in father's slaying

A grand jury has reduced the murder charge against a Lexington man who is accused of killing his father last year.

Verdis Kyle Pennington III was indicted Tuesday on an amended charge of first-degree manslaughter.

According to the indictment, Pennington, 18, intentionally shot his father, Verdis Kyle Pennington Jr., "while acting under extreme emotional disturbance."

Police said Verdis Pennington III shot his father in the head with a .357-caliber handgun at their home on Nakomi Drive during a domestic dispute Nov. 30. The senior Pennington died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.

Family members have said they thought the two were arguing because the elder Pennington wanted his son to get a job or help out more around the house. They said Verdis Pennington III pointed the gun at his father to scare him and accidentally shot him.
