Lexington man pleads not guilty in shooting of his father

Verdis Kyle Pennington III, who was indicted last month on a first-degree manslaughter charge in the death of his father, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Fayette Circuit Court.

Pennington, 18, is accused of intentionally shooting Verdis Kyle Pennington Jr. "while acting under extreme emotional disturbance." The younger Pennington initially had been charged with murder. Police have said he shot his father in the head with a .357-caliber handgun on Nov. 30 at their home on Nakomi Drive.

Fayette Circuit Judge Kimberly Bunnell set a $10,000 full cash bond. Pennington was being held in the Fayette County Detention Center.

Fayette Commonwealth's Attorney Ray Larson requested that Pennington be placed under electronic monitoring if he posts bond and returns to live with his mother in the house on Nakomi Drive. Bunnell agreed with that requirement.

Pennington is scheduled to be in court for a pre-trial conference on Feb. 24. The case has been assigned to Fayette Circuit Judge Pamela Goodwine.
