A Mercer County man who had been suspected of drug trafficking was seriously injured in a crash Monday night, and investigating officers found more evidence of drug trafficking, Boyle County Sheriff Marty Elliott said.
Steven D. Wilson, 48, who lives near Burgin, was listed in critical condition Tuesday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, a spokeswoman said.
Wilson was thrown from a Ford pickup shortly before 10 p.m. Monday after his truck went out of control and hit a tree on Ky. 33 near Northpoint Training Center, the state prison in Boyle County, Elliott said.
Boyle deputy sheriffs who arrived at the scene recognized Wilson as a man who had been under investigation for drug trafficking. The deputies found two handguns in the truck and $1,000 in cash on Wilson, Elliott said.
They also found several containers with false bottoms, suspected of being used to hide drugs, Elliott said.
The deputies obtained a warrant to search Wilson's home, where they and two Mercer County sheriff's deputies found more than $10,000 in cash in a safe, more than 200 prescription pills and prescription slips for other people, Elliott said. The pills included Xanax and Percocet.
Wilson had not been charged as of Tuesday afternoon, Elliott said. "At this point, it's all under investigation," Elliott said.
Officers will meet Wednesday with local prosecutors to decide the next step, Elliott said.
