Man arrested in shooting after committing robbery, police say

A 19-year-old wanted for shooting another man at Fontaine Road and Dinsmore Drive Tuesday was arrested Friday night after police say he committed a robbery.

A warrant for Avern Scott's arrest had been issued after police say he shot Driton Berisha in the back just after 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Richmond Commons apartment complex.

Berisha suffered "paralyzing injuries," according to a criminal complaint filed in Fayette District Court. Scott was arrested at 8:31 p.m. Friday on Centre Parkway.

According to a police uniform citation, on Friday night, Scott threatened to kill another man if he didn't give him his car and then stole the man's phone from inside his car.

Police were in the Centre Parkway area Friday night investigating an unrelated shooting that left two men with non-life-threatening injuries. Lt. Chris Van Brackel said that a man pulled up and reported that someone had tried to car-jack him. When an officer saw Scott and told him to stop, Scott ran, police say.

Scott is charged with first-degree assault in connection with the shooting. He also faces charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree fleeing and third-degree criminal trespass. He is scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. Monday.

As for the shooting that police were investigating Friday night, police said the two men had been involved in an argument with two other men outside an apartment complex at about 6:15 p.m.

One was shot in the abdomen and the other in the hand, leg and foot, said Van Brackel. Van Brackel said he did not have information on their identities.

The two men with whom the victims were arguing left in a small brown four-door car, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lexington police or Crime Stoppers.
