Man dies, another is rescued after car plunges into Bell County creek

One man was rescued, but another man died Saturday after a traffic accident in which their vehicle landed in a creek in Bell County, according to Kentucky State Police.

The accident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on Ky. 0217 in the Shillalah community when the right front wheel of a vehicle driven by Carter Creed Caldwell, 35, of Campbellsville, dropped off the pavement. The westbound vehicle traveled 120 feet in a ditch line, struck a rock wall, then careened across the eastbound lane and went over an embankment and into the creek with four feet of water, state police said.

Trooper Brian Greene, who lives in the area, heard the crash, and he and another resident, Doug Hoskins, responded, trying to free the men, who were trapped inside.

They were able to free passenger Allen Puckett, 47, of Cubbage, but were not able to free Caldwell, according to state police.

Puckett was airlifted to University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Caldwell was pronounced dead at the scene.
