Employee thwarts liquor theft at Lexington store, police say

A man was foiled in his attempt to steal a cartload of liquor from the Rite Aid in Chevy Chase on Monday night, Lexington police said.

Ray Benson, 55, simply loaded up his cart and made for the exit just before 8 p.m., police Lt. Chris Van Brackel said.

A store employee saw the man leaving, rushed out and wrestled him to the sidewalk.

"A cohort waiting in a pickup truck" outside the store quickly drove away, Van Brackel said.

Benson was charged with misdemeanor shoplifting and taken to the Fayette County Detention Center.
