A Lexington man was charged Saturday night after allegedly causing "cruel torture and punishment" to his 3-year-old second cousin, according to court records.

Danny Wayne Adams Jr., 31, of 3604 Grace Drive is charged with three counts of first-degree criminal abuse to a child 12 or under, court records said.

His girlfriend, Jessica White, was cited with first-degree criminal abuse but was not arrested, police said.

The girl was still hospitalized Sunday night.

Adams was arrested at the Lexington Police Department at 11:30 p.m. Saturday after he was questioned.

Adams and White had custody of the girl for about two to three months, according to court documents. Police were called to their Grace Drive home following complaints from the girl's grandparents.

Adams is being held on a $15,000 cash bail. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.

In addition to the Fayette County charge, Adams also was wanted on failing to appear in a Tennessee court on a drug-related charge, according to the Fayette County jail.
