Lexington man pleads guilty in son's death

Brandon Christopher Fraley of Lexington, charged in the 2010 death of his 2-year-old son, has pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter.

Fraley, 25, entered the guilty plea, part of a plea deal with prosecutors, last week. He also pleaded guilty to a second-degree persistent felony offender charge.

Prosecutors have recommended that he serve five years in prison on the manslaughter charge, which would be enhanced to 10 years because of the persistent felony offender charge. Fraley's sentencing has been scheduled for Dec. 22 in Fayette Circuit Court.

Fraley is accused of killing Derek Jaxon Cooper on Aug. 22, 2010, by asphyxiating him. According to police, Fraley, trying to stop his son from crying, held his hand over the child's face until he stopped crying.

Fraley was already in the Fayette County jail on drug and probation violation charges when he was charged in his son's death in Nov. 2010. A Fayette County grand jury indicted him on the manslaughter and persistent-offender charges in January.
