Crash in Madison kills Jackson woman, injures 4

A Jackson County woman died Tuesday night in a Madison County accident that sent three children and another adult to a hospital.

Melissa Horn, 25, of McKee, died when her westbound 1994 Ranger pickup truck crossed the center line of Ky. 21 (Big Hill Road) just outside Berea and collided head-on with a 2002 Kia van, said Deputy Willard Reardon of the Madison County sheriff's office.

Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison said Horn died of blunt-force trauma to her chest and head; she was not wearing a seat belt.

Reardon said the children, ages 4,7 and 8, were in the pickup with Horn. They and a 62-year-old man, who was in the van, were taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital with serious injuries.

"From what I gather, the lady in the pickup — there's a sharp curve there — due to the road conditions being wet, went into the path of the van and struck head-on," Reardon said Wednesday morning.

It was too early to know if there were other factors in the crash, he said.
