3 cars burn overnight in Lexington; fires called suspicious

Lexington firefighters responding to a report of a single car fire got more than they bargained for when they approached the 1700 block of Hill Rise Drive Friday morning.

Three vehicles — not one — were burning.

Battalion Chief Randy Gilliam called the fires "highly suspicious," but said no official cause had been determined.

The vehicles were far enough away from one another that it was obvious "each one was ignited individually," he said.

No one was injured, but the cars were heavily damaged. The fires started about 3:30 a.m.

The burning vehicles were in apartment parking lots at 1707, 1701 and 1721 Hill Rise Drive, off Versailles Road near Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital.

The original call was for the fire at 1707 Hill Rise. That vehicle was near an apartment building and caused minor damage to the structure, Gilliam said.

The fire department is investigating.
