Reynolds Road fuel spill complicates Lexington's holiday traffic

A diesel fuel spill caused cars to slide and traffic to be rerouted Friday afternoon on Reynolds Road — a main route to Fayette Mall and other stores — during one of Lexington's busiest shopping periods.

Police officer Justus Daniel said that when an officer first arrived after the spill, which occurred about 1:55 p.m., at least four or five vehicles had slid on the diesel off the road. Some vehicles had blown tires from sliding and hitting the curb. However, no vehicles collided.

The source and amount of the spill were unknown Friday afternoon, fire department Capt. Brad Wilson said.

Parts of Reynolds Road — called Wellington Way where it meets Clays Mill — were closed to allow for cleanup that was expected to take several hours.

Parts of the roundabout on Reynolds Road near Lexington Christian Academy were blocked. Traffic headed to Nicholasville Road via the roundabout was rerouted through LCA property and then back to Reynolds, authorities said.

A lane of the roundabout was closed for traffic heading toward Clays Mill. Keithshire Way's intersection with the Reynolds roundabout area was closed.
