State police charge two men in tobacco-store robbery

Two men were arrested Tuesday after a robbery at a tobacco store in Floyd County.

Shane D. Howard, 20, of Allen and Travis L. Fields, 20, of Pikeville were charged with first-degree robbery. They were taken to the Floyd County jail.

Howard and Fields were arrested during a traffic stop after the robbery, which police said happened shortly before 8 p.m.

State police Post 9 in Pikeville received a call from Fast Lane Tobacco in the Floyd County community of Martin. Police were told that two men wearing masks entered the store and demanded money. The men left the store with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Shortly after that, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Sgt. Keith Justice and officer Dennis Hutchinson saw a man wearing clothing that matched the description of one of the men at the store. The officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested.

The investigation is continuing.
