Second child dies as result of Rockcastle County crash

A second child has died as the result of a crash in Rockcastle County.

Malachi Hayes, 5, of Mount Vernon, died Wednesday at University of Kentucky Children's Hospital of injuries he suffered in the wreck on Saturday, the Fayette County Coroner's office said.

The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries.

Malachi's sister, Jada Hayes, 7, died at the UK hospital on Sunday from injuries in the same crash.

The children were hurt about 1 p.m. Saturday when the car they were riding in struck another vehicle at the intersection of US 150 and Maretburg Road in Rockcastle County.

According to state police, Jody Hayes, 23, was attempting a left turn onto Maretburg Road when her car collided with a car driven by Wendy Riley of Mount Vernon.

Neither Jada nor Malachi was wearing a seatbelt, troopers said. A third child in the car, Madison Hayes, 3, who was in a child safety seat, was treated at a Mount Vernon hospital and released.

Jody Hayes, the girlfriend of Jada Hayes' father, Tony Hayes, was not injured. Tony Hayes, 29, who also was in the car, was treated and released, authorities said.

Wendy Riley and her daughter, Aubriauna, 7, were treated and released.

Funeral arrangements for the Hayes children are pending.
