Tennessee man is charged in Whitley County killing

A Tennessee man has been charged with shooting and killing another man in Whitley County on Friday afternoon.

Keith E. Mason, 41, of Oak Ridge, was charged with second-degree manslaughter in the death of Robert Wayne Vanover, 60, of Corbin, said Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell.

Vanover was Mason's stepfather at one time and the two had had problems earlier, Harrell said.

On Friday, Mason was in a rural area of Whitley County near some property he owns when Vanover happened to drive by.

Vanover came back and he and Mason had an altercation. Mason claims that Vanover hit him, Harrell said.

Mason shot Vanover three times with a pistol, and Vanover did not have a gun, Harrell said.

The shooting happened near the Tennessee line, about 17 miles west of Williamsburg.

Harrell said Commonwealth's Attorney Allen Trimble advised charging Mason with manslaughter. Police plan to present the case next month to a grand jury, which could issue a different charge, or no charge.
