Man is charged with murder in crash that killed Pike County deputy sheriff

David W. Childers, 47, of Ashcamp was arrested on a murder charge Friday in connection with the wreck on Monday that killed Pike County Deputy Sheriff James Thacker, according to Kentucky State Police at the Pikeville post.

The wreck occurred about 9 p.m. Monday on U.S. 460 in the Belcher community of Pike County after Childers lost control of his sport utility vehicle and the SUV hit Thacker's cruiser, state police said just after the crash.

Thacker, 53, of Elkhorn City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A third vehicle, driven by Brenda Robinette, 38, of Pikeville, was also involved in the crash, police said.

Childers was injured and admitted to Pikeville Medical Center; Robinette was not injured.

Childers was lodged in the Pike County Detention Center.

State police provided no additional details Friday.
