1 of 3 pedestrians hit on I-64 dies

A pedestrian hit by a van on Interstate 64 died Sunday evening, state police said in a news release Monday.

Ren Yang, 65, of Morehead died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., police said.

Two other men were hit at the same time. Jimmy Yang, 39, of Morehead remained in serious condition at the Huntington hospital, police said.

The third man, Lin Hung, 24, was treated at the hospital but was not admitted.

The three were hit about 4:30 p.m. Friday on the eastbound side of I-64 in Carter County. A preliminary investigation showed that the three had been in a 2006 Toyota pickup truck, pulling a U-Haul trailer, when they pulled onto the shoulder of the road and got out of the truck, state police said.

A 2005 GMC van driven by Jason E. Goebel, 40, of Nitro, W.Va., hit the three men. Goebel was not injured.

It was unclear whether the three men who were hit were in the road or on the shoulder of the road, according to the news release.

The investigation is continuing.
