Woman dies, pregnant woman seriously hurt in crash in Bell

A Bell County woman died and a pregnant woman was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash Wednesday night, a news release from the Bell County Sheriff's Department said.

Sharon Shoffner, 23, of Beverly was pronounced dead at the scene by Bell County Coroner Jay Steele.

A passenger in the car, Crystal Wombles, 27, was flown to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. Wombles, who was eight months pregnant, was listed in critical condition late in the afternoon Thursday at the Tennessee hospital, the news release said.

Shoffner was driving a 1994 Pontiac Grand Am that apparently left Ky. 66 at Beverly and struck a tree about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The accident is under investigation by the sheriff's department.
