Lexington police searching for person who stole, crashed KinderCare bus

Police are looking for someone who stole a bus from a Lexington daycare early Monday and abandoned it after crashing into a nearby building.

The thief apparently used a set of stolen keys to take the bus from the parking lot of KinderCare, 3199 Custer Drive, Lexington police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.

Police were called after someone reported the vehicle had crashed into Members Heritage Federal Credit Union at the corner of Pimlico Parkway and Custer Drive, near Man o' War Boulevard. A KinderCare spokeswoman said the bus had crashed into an ATM.

The 14-seater bus was used to take school-age kids to and from school and the daycare, said Leslie Constans, public relations manager for KinderCare. Fayette County Public Schools will provide transportation for the students for the time being, she said.

Roberts said police think the keys to the bus were stolen in a burglary at the daycare May 12; in that incident, computers and radio equipment also were stolen.
