Somerset boy, 3, hit by mother's car dies

A 3-year-old boy died in Somerset Monday after his mother hit him with a car, police said.

The accident happened as Brittany Helton, 23, attempted to park at an apartment building on South Main Street.

Her son, Shannon Norris, was standing in front of the car. The 1992 Honda Civic hit the boy and pinned him against the building, according to a news release from the Somerset Police Department.

Emergency workers treated Shannon at the scene, but county Coroner Richard New pronounced him dead at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. Police responded to the crash at 1:54 p.m.

Ursula Moore, whose son's fiancée is the little boy's aunt, said Shannon was a happy, affectionate, energetic little boy who loved music and loved to play.

"He was just a vibrant little boy," Moore said. "God was ready to take him."

Moore said her son, 21-year-old Kyle Moore, jumped between the car and the building in an unsuccessful attempt to save the boy.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Honda was impounded as part of the investigation, Moore said.
