Scarce water sources hindered firefighters Wednesday morning as they fought a blaze that destroyed a large house on Heatherland Farm off Ironworks Road in Scott County.
Firefighters responded about 5:50 a.m. to reports of a large column of smoke and found flames burning through the roof and left side of the two-story house, which had a full basement, said James Kanavy, Scott County assistant fire chief.
"It had been burning for quite some time prior to our arrival," Kanavy said.
Firefighters had to run about 2,200 feet of hose from a hydrant to the house, but firefighters couldn't maintain the water flow needed for the size of the fire, Kanavy said. The house was an estimated at 4,000 to 5,000 square feet.
A caretaker visited the house Tuesday to adjust the air conditioning, he said.
The owners, who apparently live in California, were coming to Kentucky to assess the damage.
