Powell County woman gets three years in prison in daughter's death

A Powell County woman was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday in the death of her 22-month-old daughter, a prosecutor said.

Jessica Charles was initially charged with murder in Danika Charles' 2010 death, but she pleaded guilty this month to reckless homicide, Powell Commonwealth's Attorney Darrell Herald said.

Danika Charles died of blunt force trauma to her head, chest, abdomen, legs and arms.

Jessica Charles acknowledged that she "put the child in a position where the child could be harmed and the child was harmed," Herald said.

Herald said as part of the sentence, Charles received credit for the more than 800 days that she was either in jail or in home detention.
