Pulaski coroner pleads guilty to theft; resigns post

Pulaski County Coroner Richard New pleaded guilty in a theft case Thursday and agreed to resign, according to a court record.

New was indicted in July on 26 felony charges of stealing about $60,000 from a funeral home where he had been a partner.

The plea arrangement for New called for a sentence of 10 years, diverted for a period of five. That means if he keeps the terms and does not get into trouble, he will not go to jail.

New must complete 100 hours of community service a year during the diversion period and repay the funeral home $60,527.

He signed over $58,000 worth of stock in the funeral home and must pay $2,527 within 30 days, according to the diversion agreement in his file.
