Man charged with carrying sawed-off shotgun into store

A London man was charged Tuesday after witnesses reported that he was carrying a sawed-off shotgun in a grocery store and hitting himself in the head.

Earnest D. Carr, 41 was charged with defacing a firearm and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He was being held in the Laurel County jail.

By the time police arrived at the store, Carr had driven away in a pickup truck, according to a news release from the Laurel County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies pulled the truck over a short time later on Russell Dyche Memorial Highway. Inside, they found Carr with the sawed-off shotgun. The barrel had been shortened to 13 5/8 inches, the serial number had been filed off and a wooden "tactical handle" was added to it.
