Two Danville students in fair condition after being struck by SUV

Two middle school students were struck by a sport-utility vehicle when the driver lost control, left the road and hit a house, according to Danville police.

The students, Ben Harper and Eli Gooch, were both listed in fair condition Wednesday at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Blake Napier was driving a 1993 Ford Explorer south on Alta Avenue about 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, police said. At the intersection with East Main Street, the vehicle started to lose traction and fishtail.

It went over a curb and into a yard at the southwest corner of the intersection where it struck Harper and Gooch, two Bate Middle School students who were walking, police said. The SUV also struck the house at 436 East Main Street and a privacy fence.

Harper was brushed by the vehicle while Gooch was knocked to the ground. Gooch ended up under the front of the vehicle just short of the front tires, police said.

Napier, a Danville High School student, was uninjured.
