Home-invasion victims charged with drug trafficking

Two victims of a home invasion Wednesday in Lexington were arrested because police found about 10 pounds of drugs in their home, according to court records.

Former Kentucky high school All-Star basketball player Marques Dawson, 27, and Manee Shepard, 23, were charged with trafficking in cocaine and trafficking in marijuana.

According to an arrest citation for Shepard, police found about six pounds of marijuana and four pounds of cocaine in the house on White Oak Trace. Court records were not available for Dawson Thursday.

Police searched the home after Dawson went to St. Joseph Hospital Wednesday morning with head injuries and burns to his leg and groin thought to be caused by a hot iron. Investigators were looking for evidence that three masked men broke in, tied up Shepard and Dawson and assaulted Dawson.

Shepard pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday, according to court records.

Dawson, a Huntington, Va., native, played basketball for Rose Hill Christian Academy from 2001 to 2003, according to Herald-Leader archives. He was a guard at Middle Tennessee State University in 2005 and 2006, according to the school's Web site.
