Three handguns, AR-15 found after reports of teens fighting on Lexington street

Two reports of heavily armed juveniles fighting and firing guns in the street Wednesday afternoon prompted police to take four teenagers to headquarters for questioning. Police recovered three handguns and an AR-15 rifle thought to have been fired during the fray near Bryan Avenue, Lt. Sam Murdock said.

Police were "tracing" the firearms to determine how they wound up in the hands of the juveniles; on Wednesday night, detectives were interviewing the teens and no one had been charged, Murdock said.

The first report came in about 4 p.m. of a group of teens fighting on Highlawn Avenue, Murdock said. Callers reported hearing one shot fired.

The second report came in about an hour later of a group of as many as 20 people in a disorder a couple blocks away. Callers reported seeing one of the teens armed with a "scoped rifle," Murdock said. When police arrived, the juveniles were gone, but officers found several shell casings.

Witnesses identified the juveniles who reportedly were armed. Police found them in a car several miles away Wednesday night.
