May 06, 2013 10:20 PM

The man who died in a Sunday van crash in Harrison County was identified Monday as Alfonso Perez Esperon, 38, of the Cincinnati area, Sheriff Bruce Hampton said.

The cause of death for Esperon, 38, remained under investigation, but authorities think he drowned after the van he was in landed upside down in a ditch partially filled with rain water, Hampton said.

The 2005 Ford van was traveling east on Ky. 36 when it went off the side of the road, hit a tree, went along an embankment and then struck a telephone pole, Hampton said. The van flipped and landed in the drainage ditch about six miles west of Cynthiana.

Esperon was wearing a seat belt in the front passenger seat of the van.
