Video to be reviewed in death of 21-year-old woman struck by train in Somerset, coroner says

Authorities are investigating the death of a woman who was struck by a train in Somerset.

Pulaski County Coroner Charles Godbey identified the victim Friday as Dayona Pitman, 21, of Somerset.

Authorities have said Pitman was struck by a northbound Norfolk Southern train as she was walking along the tracks near Trinity Springs Park about 5:45 p.m. Thursday. Pitman lived a few blocks from the tracks, according to Godbey.

Godbey said the train's crew reported seeing a woman walking on the tracks and they sounded the train's horn as a warning.

According to Godbey, the crew stated that the woman began running down the track away from the train. At some point, she lay down on the tracks and was then struck by the train.

However, witnesses gave a slightly different account, the coroner said. He said witnesses told authorities the woman seemed to realize that she couldn't outrun the train and she lay down between the rails, as if hoping the train would pass over her.

"It seems like you would just get off the tracks," he said.

Godbey said authorities want to review a tape of the accident that was taken by a video camera mounted on the train.

The incident occurred only a short distance from where a man walking on the same tracks was hit by train a few months ago, Godbey said.
