The Lexington police department on Tuesday received an $850 donation from the Bluegrass Corvette Club that will provide a bulletproof and stab-resistant vest for one of the force's nine police dogs.

Seven of the dogs already had vests. After learning Tuesday night that one dog still needed a vest, Corvette club member Sonny Bates, owner of Bates Security and Sonitrol, pledged an additional $850 from his company for another vest, which will mean all the dogs are protected.

Sgt. Eric Bowling, who supervises the K-9 unit, said the dogs are often sent into dangerous situations before their handlers.

"Dogs are just like us. They follow us everywhere we go," he said. "It's important for us to have vests on. They're put in more danger than we are."
