Fire at Lexington apartment building was arson, officials say

A fire Sunday night at Terrace Green Apartments in Lexington was set intentionally, authorities said Monday.

The blaze, reported about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, began in an unoccupied ground-floor unit and spread to a second-floor unit, causing smoke damage to three units, Battalion Chief Joe Best said.

Arson investigators have determined that the fire "definitely was intentionally started," he said. However, he declined to give details.

According to Best, heat from the blaze melted soldering around a copper water pipe at the apartment complex, releasing water that helped douse most of the flames by the time firefighters arrived.

"Otherwise, it could have been a very different story," he said.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call the Bureau of Fire Investigations at (859) 231-5672.
