Laurel Co. sees 29 crashes in 16 hours

Drivers were wrecking in Laurel County Thursday almost faster than authorities could investigate the crashes.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root said Thursday night that his office had investigated 29 traffic crashes in the county over the previous 16 hours.

At least 11 of those wrecks involved serious injuries, the sheriff's department said.

The department said crashes occurred on roads "all over the county," including Ky. 92 where a van struck a garage, and Ky. 472 where a car flipped over near a creek.

Rain and slippery roads were thought to be the main contributing factors, authorities said.

"This large number of crashes during such a short period of time is very unusual in the county, and generally only occurs when snow and ice are on the roadways," the sheriff's department said.
