A 22-year-old University of Kentucky student was shot late Sunday night when two men assaulted him at a residence near campus, according to Lexington police.
The shooting was on Westwood Drive, which runs off Nicholasville Road.
Officers arrived at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of an assault involving a weapon.
Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said the student told officers that two men followed him home and tried to force their way inside. The man fought with the intruders.

Police initially thought the man had been shot in the lower back and in the head, according to Roberts. But at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, staff determined the head wound was not from a gunshot, according to Roberts.
The two attackers entered the home, Roberts said, but fled after a woman who also lived there fired a warning shot at them with a .22-caliber rifle.
Nothing was taken, Roberts said.
The victim's name had not been released as of Monday.
According to Roberts, investigating officers saw marijuana and drug paraphernalia at the shooting scene. The female at the residence was cited for tampering with physical evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia, she said.
Another person who lived at the same address was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, Roberts said.
The University of Kentucky Police Department issued a public safety alert Monday morning informing students about the shooting. The safety alert suggested students call 911 in case of emergency, but listed some precautions students should take.
"Carry a cellphone to be able to call for help in emergencies. Do not travel alone after dark; walk with a friend or with a group," the statement said. It also told commuters to park in well-lit areas and if approached to hand over any requested items.
