Lexington police are investigating the shooting of two men near the Catholic Action Center, East Fifth and Chestnut streets, on Friday afternoon.

Both men sustained non-life threatening injuries, Lt. Chad Bacon said.

Police received a call at 5:44 p.m. of gunshots at the intersection, Bacon said. He said no shell casings were found.

Ginny Ramsey, director of the Catholic Action Center, described the incident as a drive-by shooting targeting men across the street from the center at Sweet Daddy's Bar & Grill. Police did not confirm her account.

"This is a tough neighborhood," she said. "We just hope whoever did it, is caught and hope that both men who were injured are brought back to health."

Ramsey identified one of the men as Artis Gibbs, who she said was a volunteer at the center. She said a bullet grazed his leg. Ramsey said Gibbs was taking a break and smoking a cigarette when he was shot.

The Catholic Action Center is a day center for the homeless.
