Forty-three people have been indicted in federal court as part of a large-scale methamphetamine investigation centered on Leslie County.

It is one of the largest federal meth cases in the area.

Most of the people were indicted in December, but the charges were sealed while authorities made arrangements to arrest them. Many had their initial court appearances in federal court in London on Tuesday.

Five related indictments listing a total of 43 people charged that they conspired to make meth, primarily in Leslie County. One case alleges meth production in Clay and Laurel counties as well.

The time period covered in most of the cases is early 2009 through November 2013.

The conspiracy charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years, though people with prior drug convictions could face longer sentences.
