A man in his 20s was in critical condition after he was shot once in the back at Ashford Place Apartment Homes on Woodhill Drive on Friday morning, Lexington police said.
The man, whose name was not released, was shot about 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot in front of the apartment complex, according to police. He was taken to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts said.
Officers were trying to sort out the conflicting reports and descriptions, Lt. Chris Van Brackel said.
One witness reported seeing two men running from the scene, but another witness stated that it was a black man and a white woman, Van Brackel said. There was a report of someone jumping into a red car a few blocks away, but Van Brackel said it was unclear whether that was related to the shooting.

"Everybody is wearing winter clothing, which obviously doesn't help us very much," Van Brackel said.
The victim was not able to describe what happened, he said.
A police canine unit searched the area immediately after the shooting, apparently without results. Cold temperatures and periodic snow showers complicated the process.
According to Van Brackel, the shooting took place in an empty parking space between two parked vehicles. Police marked off the parking lot, where they took photographs and interviewed witnesses. What appeared to be a blue tarp, a blanket and some articles of clothing lay on the pavement at the spot where the shooting apparently occurred. Officers were snapping pictures and taking measurements around the clothing.
