Tanker wreck shut down U.S. 27 in Pulaski County for hours

Both lanes of U.S. 27 in Pulaski County were blocked for more than six hours early Thursday morning after a tanker truck wreck shut down the highway.

The tanker truck, which carried thousands of gallons of gasoline, crashed about 5 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 27 at Sloan Valley, south of Somerset, according to state police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement division. Several thousand gallons of fuel spilled when the tanker trailer overturned, police said.

The driver, Lucas Gregory, 24, of Whitley City, was flown to University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, troopers said. There was no immediate word on his condition.

Police said Gregory apparently lost control of his 2012 Peterbilt truck and ran off the pavement. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected as factors, authorities said. Gregory was wearing a seat belt, state police said.

Several agencies, including hazardous-materials units, area fire departments and environmental protection representatives, responded, state police said.
