Man dies after exchanging gunshots with state trooper in Shelby County

A state trooper exchanged gunshots with a man who died later Sunday night, Kentucky State Police said.

The man, later identified as Christopher Horine, 42, of Shelbyville, was pronounced dead at University of Louisville Hospital. The shooting occurred about 10:15 p.m. Sunday at a home on Hazel Lawn Drive in Shelby County, state police said.

According to troopers, a woman at the home called police, stating that someone was trespassing in her driveway and that she wanted him removed.

When the trooper arrived, the man fired a shot from a porch, causing the trooper to take cover behind his cruiser, according to police. The man fired again and advanced on the trooper, who returned fire and struck the man, police said.

The trooper, Eddie Whitworth, wasn't injured. He is a six-year veteran of the state police.

The case is under investigation.
