21-year-old Hazard man dies of stab wound from parking lot fight

A 21-year-old Hazard man died early Monday, a little more than two hours after being stabbed in an altercation, Kentucky State Police said.

Edward M. Hughes was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. Monday at Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital, where he had gone to seek treatment Sunday night, state police said.

Alan Williams, 29, of Hazard is charged with murder, according to state police.

Hazard hospital officials called police about 11:13 p.m. Sunday to report that a stabbing victim had arrived at the emergency room and was being treated for a chest wound, troopers said.

State Police said they went to Cherokee Hills Apartments in Hazard, where they determined that Hughes and Williams had gotten into a fight in the parking lot.

During the struggle, Williams allegedly drew a knife and stabbed Hughes once in the chest, police said.

Hughes' body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

Williams was taken to the Kentucky River Jail at Hazard.

An investigation is continuing.
