Two people were killed and two were injured Wednesday in a crash that closed Versailles Road, Lexington police said.
The collision, between a Honda Civic and a Hyundai, happened at about 3:15 p.m. on Versailles Road near Terrace View Drive. Emergency crews had to extricate victims.
Police Lt. Tommy Perkins said the driver of the Honda was traveling outbound in the 1700 block of Versailles Road when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the Hyundai. The road was shut down until 5:30 p.m. while the Collision Reconstruction Unit investigated.
The driver of the Honda, a young man, died instantly, Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn said. A male passenger in the Honda died at University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, Ginn said. Another passenger in the Honda and a female in the Hyundai also were taken to the hospital.
The names of those who died were being withheld until relatives could be notified.
Alcohol containers were found in the Honda, Ginn said, but he said he didn't know whether anyone in the Honda had consumed the alcohol. Toxicology tests will determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash, he said.
