An Elizabethtown police officer fatally shot a man in an exchange of gunfire Sunday night, Kentucky State Police said.
Troopers identified the officer as Josh Burris and said he was answering a call about a man assaulting a woman when the shooting occurred.
The man was identified late Monday as Byron D. Herbert, 29.
Police said Burris was dispatched to a Kroger store just before 8 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report that a man was brandishing a handgun and assaulting a woman in the parking lot.
Witnesses and video surveillance footage indicated that the man fired his gun and that Burris responded with gunfire that struck the man, state police said.
The suspect was taken to Elizabethtown's Hardin Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
An investigation revealed that the suspect had additional weapons and ammunition, state police said.
